"Something secret from the other world..."

The original compositions of the 19th century for guitar, and particularly of Spanish Romanticism, stand in the center of his artistic ambition, next to the lute compositions by Johann Sebastian Bach.Often performed are - apart from the transcriptions of Manuel de Falla and Claude Debussy - the prominent Works of the 20th century composed by Benjamin Britten, Hector Villa-Lobos, Joaquin Rodrigo, Toru Takemitzu. The encounter with the master guitar maker Gerhard Oldiges inspired Joachim Gassmann´s intensive study of the instruments and the repertoire of 19th century Spanish guitar music...
...resulting in the CD recordings "La Leona" and "Sueno" . The title "La Leona" refers to an instrument made by Torres and on which Tárrega used to play impressing his contemporary audience with a sound of "lionesque/lionlike fortitude". But the resonance to Joachim Gassmann´s interpretations has not been less enthusiastically received:
"The great melodies show to their best advantage, not swiftness and haste. Great arches, the long sustained air; L-e-g-a-t-o. Thus compositions like the short "Lagrima" are turned into musical gems!"
from Gitarre und Laute 2/1997
"This guitar, at least, roars, sings, whispers and whistles - this CD is entirely a piece of art."
from musikblatt 1/1997
